Preventive dentistry encompasses all aspects of good oral hygiene and care.

Patient education, starting at a young age, will help keep you practising proper oral hygiene habits for a lifetime.

What does it mean to practise good oral hygiene?

Good oral hygiene means following all the right steps to keep your teeth and gums as healthy as possible. These steps include:

  • Brushing and flossing at least twice daily
  • Using an antiseptic mouthwash
  • Cleaning your tongue and the insides of your cheeks
  • Getting your teeth professionally cleaned twice a year
  • Seeing your dentist for a check-up at least twice a year

What will your dentist do during a check-up?

Your dentist will check for any early signs of infection or decay, or any overcrowding or other issues. We will also screen you for oral cancer.

Why do I need a professional cleaning twice a year?

It can be difficult to remove all the tartar and plaque that builds up on your teeth at home. Brushing and flossing cannot properly clean all the nooks and crannies of your teeth properly. Getting an Airflow® or hygiene clean will help rid those hard-to-reach places of any bacteria before the bacteria have a chance to multiply and cause infections and decay.
